The Birmingham Uprising was an uprising in the city of Birmingham, Alabama, USA in protest of racial segregation in 1963.
Background[]
The civil rights movement had failed to achieve legal equality between black and white people after months of nonviolent protests. After a bombing by white supremacists destroyed a black home and black businesses. Riots in the city of Birmingham began.[1]
Tactics[]
Thousands of black people rioted, seizing control of a 9 block area, destroying police cars, injuring several cops (including the chief inspector), and burning down white-owned businesses.[1]
Results[]
By the end of the uprising, President Kennedy was pleading for Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act.[1]
